Women's Crew Hosts Home Race This Weekend

THE RACE - The Penn women’s rowing team makes its 2006 home debutSaturday in the Class of ‘89 Plate race against Cornell and Rutgers. The Quakers have had a rough spring season so far, finishing third in both the Connell and Orange Challenge Cups after solid showings in two races at Clemson.

SPECTATOR BUS - A spectactor bus will take fans from Lloyd Hall (at the Art Museum end of Boathouse Row) to the grandstand at 9 a.m. on the morning of the race. The bus will return after the final race of the morning.

LAST YEAR - Cornell defended the Plate in the closest finish ever, beating Penn in 6:40.77 to the Quakers’ 6:40.85. Rutgers finished third, six seconds behind.

THE HISTORY - The Class of ‘89 Plate was first contested between Penn and Rutgers in 1991. The next year, Cornell joined the race and it has been at three-team competition ever since. Cornell has dominated the race in its history, winning 10 times, while Rutgers has three wins and Penn two, with its last in 2000 on the Schuylkill. The race has a history of close finishes, with it being decided by less than a second four times.
