CLEMSON, S.C. - The University of Pennsylvania women's rowing team opened its season Saturday with a pair of races in Clemson.

The Quakers' varsity 8 finished third in the morning race with Clemson, Indiana, Marist and Purdue in a time of 6:52.8, behind Clemson (6:46.9) and Indiana (6:49.0). Penn's second varsity 8 finished just0.7 seconds behind Clemson with a7:04.0 finish, while the Penn "A" varsity 4 crew won with a time of 7:48.4.

"It was a huge finish for us," said Head Coach Barb Kirch Grudt, whose team competed against two other crews - Clemson and Indiana - that have been just on the bubble for qualifying for the NCAA championships. "The fact that these crews got together to race is nice."

In the afternoon head-to-head race with Clemson, the Quakers markedly improved, but still fell to the Tigers. Penn finished in 6:47.6, behind Clemson's 6:46.2

"It was a great race,"Grudt said."They were side-by-side the whole way with only about two feet seperating us."

Also in the afternoon session, Penn's second varsity 8 won in a time of 6:54.6, and the Penn "A" varsity 4 cruised to victory in 7:45.4, 12 seconds ahead of Clemson's "B" boat.

Penn returns to action on March 26 when it races Yale and Columbia for the Connell Cup at 7 a.m. in New York City.
