Women's Cross Country Opens at Fordham Fiasco

PHILADELPHIA - The Penn women's cross country squad begins its 2011 campaign with the Fordham Fiasco on Saturday morning.

The Quakers bring back the core of their team this season, the first under head coach Blake Boldon, including junior Leslie Kovach. Kovach was an All-Region honoree in 2010, the first female Quaker to garner that recognition since 2007. She was the top finisher in every meet for the Red and Blue and finished in second place overall twice, including in the Fordham Fiasco.

Other key returnees include juniors Margaret Diacont and Megan Powell and senior Veronica Salcido. Sophomore Kersie Jhabvala will also push for a spot in the team's top five.

Last season the Quakers won the Fiasco for a second straight year, with three runners finishing in the top seven. Kovach's second-place time was 18:26.51, less than nine seconds behind the winner. Teammate Powell was fifth, crossing the finish line in 18:47.79. This year's event has expanded and features over 30 schools competing in the women's race.

Tomorrow's race is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. A full recap will be available tomorrow afternoon.
