Philadelphia, Pa. - The University of Pennsylvania women's fencing team continued its success bydefeating Temple, 14-13, and Princeton, 20-7, on Wednesday in Weightman Hall.
The Quakers (13-2, 2-1 Ivy)fenced Temple first on the day. Said Head Coach Dave Micahnik, "I'm glad that we got to compete against Temple because of the cross-town rivalry."
Against Temple, Penn won the foil with a score of 5-4. Zoya Abdikulovarecorded two wins in the weapon andEve Overton and Christina Kaneshige won the other two bouts in the Red and Blue victory. The Quakerslost the epee, 6-3. Holly Buechel went 2-1 in the weapon in the loss. In the sabre, Penn won with a score of 7-2. Lauren Phillips and Cassandra Frey both went 3-0 in the weapon in the victory.
The Quakers next fenced Princeton, winning the sabre, 9-0. Katelyn Sherry, Frey and Annika Eiremo all went 3-0 in the victory. In the foil, the Red and Blue defeated the Tigers, 5-4. Kaneshige went 2-1 in the win. The Quakers won the epee, 6-3, with Buechel sweeping her opponents, 3-0 and Angelika Kyrimi went 2-1.
The Penn women's fencing team returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 12 when they are in action at Temple with Columbia, Cornell, Penn State and Northwestern.
