- Hosting the Philadelphia Invitational, the women's fencing team opened its 2012 season by going 4-1 on Saturday, falling only to Northwestern, a team that entered the day ranked #4 in the nation. The Quakers defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, Johns Hopkins, Sacred Heart and NJIT by comfortable margins.

Penn opened the day with a 19-8 victory over the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights. A 9-0 edge in foil was key for the Quakers, spurred by 3-0 performances from Wendy Zhao, Sarah Parmacek and Amrit Bhinder.

The Quakers followed that up with a 17-10 win over Johns Hopkins. Zhao and Bhinder again went undefeated for the Red and Blue, and were joined by Luona Wang who went 3-0 as foil went unbeaten for the second bout in a row.

Penn ran into some difficulty in its third bout, a 15-12 loss to Northwestern. Despite being up 10-8 going into epee, the Wildcats dominated the final event, 7-2, to gain the victory forthe fifthyear in a row over the Red and Blue.

Sacred Heart provided a tight match following the loss, but Penn was able to get back on track with a 15-12 decision over the Pioneers. Wang and Bhinder again went 3-0, and a 7-2 advantage in foil was enough to give the Quakers the win.

Penn's final match was a 21-6 domination over NJIT. Foil went undefeated for the third time on the day and sabre had its best showing with an 8-1 edge to guarantee the victory.

Penn returns to action next weekend at the Penn State Invitational. The Nittany Lions are ranked #1 in the USFCA poll and will be joined by several solid programs in the field. A full schedule will be forthcoming.
