Women's Fencing has Perfect Day

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of Pennsylvania women's fencing team went a perfect 3-0 in day two of the Philadelphia Invitational Multi-Meet. Penn defeated North Carolina (19-8), Rutgers (24-3) and Duke (16-11). By winning three bouts on Sunday the Quakers inproved to 5-1 on the young season.

In the Red and Blue's defeat of North Carolina, Cassandra Partyka, Holly Buechel and Ilana Sinkin all went 3-0. Freshman Abby Emerson picked up two victories. Penn shut out Rutgers in the foil and epee. Zoya Abdikulova and Emerson combined for six wins in the foil, while Ana Gutierrez-Colina, Kristen Hughes and Buechel tallied all nine wins in the epee.

The Quakers closest bout of the day came against Duke. After losing the sabre 2-7 Abdikulova and Hughes led the Red and Blue to victory by winning all three of their bouts in their respective weapons.

Penn will travel to University Park, Pa. on Saturday, Jan. 28 to take part in the Penn State Invitational.
