Women's Fencing Has Six Top-10 Finishers at NCAA Regionals

DURHAM, N.C. - The University of Pennsylvania women's fencing team put together a solid day of competition at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional at Duke University on Saturday. Six fencers finished in the top-10 in their respective weapon. The foil team led the way with three top-10 finishes.

Ilana Sinkin, who was a No. 12 seed, shocked the competition with a second-place finish. Abby Emerson finished sixth, Eve Overton was ninth and Zoya Abdikulova placed 11th.

In the saber, Cassandra Partyka had the best finish for Penn, placing fourth. Cassandra Frey also competed and was 10th.

Holly Buechel led the epee with a fifth-place finish. Penn's other two competitors were freshmen Ana Gutierrez-Colina, who placed 12th, and Kristen Hughes who came in 20th.

The Quakers could have as many as five fencers qualify for the NCAA Championships. An official announcement of all competitiors will bereleased onMonday. The NCAA Championships will take place from March 16-19 in Houston, Texas.
