Providence, R.I. -- The University of Pennsylvania women's fencing team finished third overall at the Intercollegiate Fencing Association tournament, held at Brown on Saturday. Combined with the men's second-place finish, the Red and Blue took second overall in the tournament. Harvard won the men's and women's titles as well as the combined title.
In the team rounds, the women's sabre team placed first overall for the second-consecutive year. The team notched 29 victories, with Katelyn Sherry collecting eight wins on the day, Lauren Phillips having 10 wins and Cassandra Frey notching 11 victories. The Quakers finished third in the women's foil with 24 victories and fifth in the women's epee with 21 wins on the day.
Individually, Sherry defeated teammate Phillips for the bronze metal in the sabre, 15-9. Team captain Christina Kaneshige finished sixth in the foil and Holly Buechel defeated Meghan Phair of Cornell, 12-8, to take the bronze in the epee.
"I'm estatic," said Head Coach Dave Micahnik. "They came through like a true team today. People did their jobs tremendously. I am very delighted with everyones performance."
The Quakers are next in action at the NCAA Regional Championships, held at Drew University in Madison, N.J.on Saturday, March 5.
