Women's Fencing Has Strong Showing at NCAA Championships

Houston, Texas -- The University of Pennsylvania women's fencing team stands in seventh place after the first day of competition at the NCAA Fencing Championships at Rice University and Harris County-Houston Sports Authority on Saturday.

Five members of the Red and Blue are competing in the Championships. In the women's epee, Holly Buechel is leading the competition. She had 11 victories in the weapon on the day.

In the women's sabre, Katelyn Sherry had nine wins on the day and Cassandra Frey had six victories. Christina Kaneshige currently stands 16th in a tough women's foil competition. She had six wins on the day and teammate Eve Overton had one victory.

The team had 65 total wins for their seventh place position after the first day of competition. The women's final rounds will take place on Sunday, March 20.
