PHILADELPHIA - Four members of Penn women's fencing team will be taking part in the NCAA Fencing Championships at Harvard, Thursday and Friday, March 26-26.
Junior Danielle Kamis headlines the group of four, three of which are making return appearances to the NCAA Championships. Fellow classmate Stephanie Wheeler and sophomore Dominika Franciszkowicz and freshman Aida Abdikulova are the others traveling to Boston.
Kamis will be fencing sabre, and making her third consecutive trip to the championships after finishing sixth at the Mid-Atlantic Regionals two weekends ago. As a freshman she received honorable mention All-America honors.
Wheeler was also an honorable mention All-America last year as she reached the NCAA Championships in epee. At the regionals she fenced her way to a ninth place finish on the day to earn a bid.
Franciszkowicz is making her second straight appearance in the NCAA Championships. Last year she was an honorable mention All-America selection. At the Mid-Atlantic Regionals she took ninth. Though she didn't automatically qualify for the Championships she earned an at-large bid.
Abdikulova had the most impressive regionals finish of all her teammates. The first year entered competition seeded 16th in foil, but fenced her way to an eighth place finish, earning an automatic trip to the NCAA Championships.
Penn as a team has finished in seventh place at the NCAA Championships each of the past two years. In 2009 they won 103 bouts, an 11 bout improvement from 2008 as five men and four women took part in the event. Both the men and the women each had two fencers earn All-America honors.
