Women's Fencing Turn out 4-1 Performance at Home

PHILADELPHIA – After two solid wins over Sacred Heart and Duke, the University of Pennsylvania women’s fencing team’s next three duals at the Philadelphia Invitational were decided by one point. Before the day’s bouting began in the Coach Dave Micahnik Fencing Center, the five seniors -- Rachel Chin, Susan Contess, Krystyna Golden, Sarah Parmacek, and Luona Wang -- were recognized during the lone home event.

Round 1: Sacred Heart, W 18-9

Round 2: Duke, W 18-9
Round 3: Northwestern, W 14-13
Round 4: Temple, L 13-14
Round 5: UNC, W 14-13

Foil
The foil squad saw their 10 dual win streak snapped in a tough battle with Northwestern followed by another with Temple. The group returned to its winning ways with a 6-3 win over UNC. Senior Luona Wang recorded the most wins with a 9-2 record, including 2-0 marks against Duke and Northwestern paired with 2-1 scores against Temple and UNC. Fellow senior Rachel Chin had the second most wins in the weapon with seven, including a 3-0 bout against Duke.

Epee
In the final round of the day, sophomore Alejandra Trumble anchored the group against UNC with a tied score, 13-13. Despite the group falling to the Tarheels, Trumble claimed her third win in the round, 5-3, to give the Red and Blue a 14-13 overall win. The sophomore finished the day 12-1, the most wins and best record for any of the Quakers.

Sabre
Out of the three weapons, the sabre won the most duals with four. The group started the day out with an 8-1 win over Sacred Heart and tacked on another one after an exciting 5-4 round with Duke. Two additional close bouts with both Temple and UNC went in favor of the Red and Blue. After struggling against the Owls with three straight losses, sophomore Shriya Joshi claimed the first point for Penn and a second was added by fellow sophomore Dana Kong. During the final three bouts, all three fencers -- Joshi, Kong, and freshman Arabella Uhry – were victorious and ended it, 5-4.

Up Next
Penn returns to action next weekend in Evanston, Ill. for the NU Duals hosted by Northwestern. The two-day event will be the final competition the Red and Blue will fence in before the Ivy League Fencing Round-Robin Championships.
