Women's Fencing Wins Twice at Penn Multi-Meet

PHILADELPHIA – The Penn women’s fencing team opened its dual-meet season on Saturday as they hosted Drew and Sacred Heart. The women defeated Drew, 25-2, and Sacred Heart, 20-7, to start the season 2-0.

Up first for the Quakers was Drew. Penn swept action in both foil and sabre. Zoya Abdikulova, Danielle Kamis and Gabrielle Nagler each went 3-0. In addition, Kathryn Anthony, Alexis Baran, Abby Emerson, Kristen Hughes and Ilana Sinkin went 2-0. Stephanie Wheeler, Jenna Stahl, Erica Nist-Lund, Rachel Margolis, Diana Ark and Tamara Levy also won bouts for Penn.

Penn used a balanced team effort to defeat Sacred Heart. 12 fencers won at least one bout. Emerson led the way, winning three times. Abdikulova, Anthony and Sinkin were also undefeated, winning both their matches. Ark and Levy each won a bout to ensure the sweep for Penn in foil. Nagler won twice while Nist-Lund added another victory.

Penn is off until they travel across-town to Temple to participate in the Philadelphia Invitational on January 13, 2008. In the meantime, they will welcome back Penn fencers from eras past to join them in the annual Alumni Meet at Penn on January 6, 2008 at 1 p.m.
