Women's Golf at Princeton This Weekend

PHILADELPHIA - The Penn women's golf team enjoyed unprecedented success last year, but it will not take long for people to realize that it is a new year and a new team. Gone are Catherine Elliott, Meredith Kotowski and Lisette Vitter, who spent the last four years leading the program.

Say hello to Olivia Chang, Michelle Lee and Rui Li. Those three freshmen, along with junior Tiffany Cheung and sophomore Isabel Han -- a duo that played a major role in last year's triumphs -- will tee off the 2010-11 season this weekend at the Princeton Invitational. The tournament will be held on the par-72 Springdale Golf Club; the 12-team field will play 36 holes on Saturday and 18 on Sunday. Another sophomore, Elizabeth Kresock, will compete as an individual for the Quakers.

As usual, the field is packed with Ivy teams -- in addition to Penn, the host Tigers will be involved along with Columbia, Harvard and Yale. It will give the newcomers, and the returning duo, a first look at their competition and they begin defense of their Ivy League title from last April.

"We are really looking forward to the Princeton event this weekend," said head coach Mark Anderson, who enters his third season at Penn. "I am excited to see how the freshmen perform this weekend in their first collegiate event. The women are playing well and their confidence is high.We have a very young team this year, but they are very seasoned tournament players. With Tiffany, Isabel and Elizabeth showing the three freshmen the ropes, they have become very comfortable at Penn in a short period of time. These six players are going to push each other all season to get better. I know if they play their games, we will contend in every event we play in. I think this young team is going to surprise a lot of people this season."
