Women's Golf Finishes Second at Delaware

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - Led by a standout performance from freshman Sophia Chen, who earned medalist honors, the University of Pennsylvania women's golf team finished second out of 10 teams at the University of Delaware Fall Invitational on Sunday. This completed the fall portion of the Quakers' 2013-14 season.

Chen shot even-par 71, a collegiate low, in her first round on Saturday, then followed that up with a 76 and 75 to finish the 54-holetournament at 222. She ended the 54 holes tied with Delaware's Grace Chua, then defeated Chua on the first playoff hole to grab the individual title.

"Sophia played great this weekend," said head coach Mark Anderson. "It is quite an accomplishment to win a Division I golf tournament, but to do it as a freshman is really impressive. She is able to control her emotions very well on the course. She doesn't let bad shots upset her and she doesn't get overly excited when she's playing well.

"It was very windy this weekend, and the conditions were tough at times," he continued. "You had to be able to handle adversity and bounce back from bad holes, and Sophia did that better than anyone in the tournament. I'm sure she will contend for the top spot in many tournaments during her time at Penn."

As a team, Penn shot 307-313-305--925 to finish behind only the host Blue Hens (303-308-298--909) at the Rehoboth Beach Country Club. Rollins College was third, at 929, while Ivy foe Brown was a distant fourth (959).

Junior Amanda Chin tied for fourth in the field of 53 golfers, shooting 78-76-73--227, while senior Olivia Chang (77-79-80--236) tied for 15th. Penn's lineup included two other freshmen, Franchesca de la Torre (81-82-78--241/t-23rd) and Isabella Rahm (84-82-78--245/28th), while yet another newcomer, Erin Lo, finished 25th playing the event as an individual (82-77-83--242).

"I was proud of how our team played this fall," said Anderson. "We had three and sometimes four freshmen in our starting lineup, and they did a great job along with our upperclassmen finishing third, second and second in our last three events."
