WALLACE, N.C. - The Penn women's golf team entered the final round of the Lady Seahawk Classic with the lead, but apparently UNC-Wilmington decided it did not want to be hospitable hosts after all.
The Lady Seahawks blistered thepar-72 River Landing Golf CourseTuesday morning, shooting 299 as a team which was 16 strokes ahead of every other school for the round. That was more than enough for them to overtake the Quakers and win the team title with a three-round total of 915. Penn, which shot 323 Tuesday after rounds of 300 and 305 Monday, finished second at 928. Jacksonville State (315 on Tuesday) was third in 931, while Elon (317 on Tuesday) was fourth with 933. Those four easily outdistanced the rest of the 10-team field.
Penn's top four struggled Tuesday, each carding her highest round of the tournament. Nevertheless, the Quakers had all four finish among no lower than tied for 11th overall. Catherine Elliott shot 81 Tuesday morning and finished the tournament at 227, which tied her for fourth place overall. Tiffany Cheung and Meredith Kotowski also shot 81s Tuesday and finished at 233 and 234, respectively, to place in ties for ninth and 11th. Freshman Isabel Han had the Quakers' best round Tuesday, carding 80, which allowed her to shoot 234 for the tournament and tie Kotowski and two others for 11th. Elizabeth Kresock (84) finished 41st overall with a three-round 253.
UNCW's Carmen Perez-Narbon won medalist honors, shooting 69-73-73--215 to easily beat the 51-player field. Jacksonville State's Lucia Fernandez was second with a three-round 224, while Elon's Tara McFadden was third with a 225.
The Quakers return to action next Monday and Tuesday, participating in the Hoya Invitational which will be hosted by Georgetown University and held in Beallsville, Md.
