2011 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament Bracket
PHILADELPHIA - For the fifth consecutive year, Penn has traversed the regular season and found a spot in the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament, this time set for a first round game at No. 5 seed Duke on May 15 at 2 p.m.
The Quakers will be making their seventh trip to the national tournament and are unseeded for the first time in the recent stretch of postseason play. Another difference for the Red and Blue is that for the first time in five years, Penn was selected as an at-large qualifier, using the entire season's body of work to prove their worth to the selection committee and not the Ivy League's automatic entry to the NCAA Tournament.
Overall in the NCAA Tournament, Penn is 9-6 and the Quakers have advanced to the final weekend of the tournament three out of the last four seasons. In 2008, Penn reached the national title game as the No. 2 seed in the tournament before falling to No. 1 Northwestern, 10-6. In fact, all four of Penn's recent trips to the national tournament have seen the Red and Blue knocked out by the eventual champions, three times to the Wildcats and last year to Maryland.
The Quakers enter the tournament with a record of 11-5 and a share of a fifth consecutive Ivy League regular season title. Head coach Karin Brower Corbett has made sure her team is battle tested for the NCAA Tournament, with games against team ranked at the time No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4. The Quakers split those four outings, with wins over No. 3 North Carolina (10-7) and No. 4 Duke (13-10) and losses at No. 1 Maryland (16-4) and No. 2 Northwestern (14-10). All four of those teams are competing in the 2011 NCAA Tournament and a Penn run to the national semifinals would likely include some rematches along the way.
Penn, which has an RPI ranked No. 11 in the country and a strength of schedule ranked No. 13, will take on the Blue Devils for the third time in the NCAA Tournament. The Quakers are 2-0 against Duke in the NCAA Tournament, with a 9-8 overtime win in the 2008 national semifinals and a 10-9 win in the 2009 quarterfinals in double overtime. Just two weeks ago, Penn downed Duke, 13-10, in the regular-season finale.
