PHILADELPHIA -With the first official practices of 2015 in the books, the University of Pennsylvania's women's lacrosse team will head into the start of the season ranked No. 13 in the preseason Media Poll and No. 14 by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) based on the preseason rankings released today.
The Media Poll has Penn ranked No. 13, one spot ahead of Princeton. Penn received 101 votes to 80 for the Tigers. Maryland is atop the preseason Media Poll with 11 of a possible 12 first place votes. North Carolina is second, garnering one first place vote.
In the IWLCA poll, the Quakers received 147 votes to slot in at No. 14, just ahead of rival Princeton which totaled 113 votes to rank No. 15.
Defending national champion Maryland was a unanimous choice as preseason No. 1 accoridng to the IWLCA, highlighting three non-conference opponents for the Red and Blue inside the Top-20. Also on Penn's 2015 schedule and inside the preseason Top-20 are No. 5 Northwestern and No. 17 Georgetown. A fourth non-conference opponent, Towson, is listed in the "Also Receiving Votes" group.
The Quakers, defending Ivy League and Ivy League Tournament champions, have reached eight consecutive NCAA Tournaments andreturn 25 players from last season’s team, including 11 players who started 12 or more games. First-team All-American and Ivy League Defender of the YearMeg Markhamreturns for the defense, playing in front of fellow Tewaaraton Award nominee and first-team All-Ivy selectionLucy Ferguson. After missing all of 2014 with injury, 2013 Ivy League Midfielder of the YearShannon Manginiwill also return for the Quakers. She will join Penn’s leading scorer from 2014,Tory Bensen, and first-team All-Ivy selectionNina Corcoranon attack. As a group, Penn returns nine players who have earned 12 career All-Ivy selections.
The Red and Blue open their 2015 campaign on February 21 at Delaware with a 1 p.m. start.
