PHILADELPHIA - Junior Rachel Manson scored a career-high five goals and sophomore Becca Edwards notched a hat trick as No. 20 Penn rolled over Temple, 15-5, in women's lacrosse action Wednesday.
Penn (2-0) dominated the game from the start, scoring the first six goalsand leading12-2 at the half. Temple (0-1) didn't get on the board until Brittney Hoffman's talley with 9:28 left in the first half.
Edwards opened the scoring just over four minutes into the game when a shot by Hannah Rudloff rebounded off goalie Bridget McMullan. Edwards scooped the shot in mid-air past McMullen tobegin a 6-0 Penn run over the next 10 minutes. Edwards completed her hat trick in that span, Manson added two and Ali DeLuca scored her first.
Penn's scoring barrage didn't stop after Hoffman's goal made it 6-1. DeLuca tallied her second a minute later, and Allison Ambrozy and Kaitlyn Lombardo both scored over the next three minutes.
Allison Frengs got one back for the Owls, but the Quakers would end the half on a 3-0 run with goals by Hannah Rudloff and two more from Manson, with 16 seconds and 1.4 seconds left in the half.
The second half was less frenetic than the first. Frengs added her second to start the half before Lombardo and Chelsea Kocis made it 14-3 with 15 minutes left. Frengs finished her hat trick, Manson scored her fifth and Nicole Canglia finished the scoring to end the game.
Sarah Waxman picked up the win for Penn, giving up three goals in 52:30 of play. Emily Szelest saw her first career action in relief of Waxman, playing 7:30 and giving up a pair of goals. McMullan went the distance for the Owls in taking the loss.
Penn returns to action Saturday when it hosts Towson at 1 p.m.
