PHILADELPHIA --With the first official practice of the 2016 women's lacrosse season set for this afternoon, the University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse program will enter this first training session ranked No. 14 in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Preseason Coaches Poll.
The Quakers, who have reached nine consecutive NCAA Tournaments, received 116 votes in the preseason poll. Defending national champion Maryland was a unanimous selection as No. 1, receiving all 20 first place nods.
Four of Penn's opponents for the 2016 season are in the preseason poll -- each inside the Top 12. In addition to the top-ranked Terrapins, Penn will play No. 4 Duke, No. 5 Northwestern and No. 12 Princeton during the regular season.
In the other major preseason polls, Penn was ranked No. 14 by Inside Lacrosse and No. 16 in the Nike/Lacrosse Magazine poll.
Last season, Penn finished with a 14-5 record, reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament. 12 letterwinners return for the Red and Blue, including six starters -- led by Nina Corcoran who set a school record with 40 assists last season and finished fourth in the Ivy League with 61 points.
Penn begins its 2016 season on February 20, hosting Delaware for a 12 p.m. first draw at Franklin Field.
