In addition to the championship-style racing -- something head coach Mike Lane has been stressing this year in the run-up to the May 19 Ivy League Championships -- the Quakers will conduct another of its annual cup races. That will take place on Saturday morning, when Penn and Cornell race together for the Class of ’89 Plaque. Cornell, ranked 19th in this week's CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll, has taken the Plaque the last three years; the two years before that, the Red and Blue owned it.
In addition to that head-to-head matchup, Penn will see a number of other nationally ranked programs during the course of the event. In Saturday morning's seven-boat race, Penn'sheat featuresNo. 20 Duke. In theafternoon, the Quakers will go head-to-head with No. 4 Ohio State and No. 14 Clemson among thefive other boats. On Sunday, third-ranked Virginia is in Penn's six-boat heat.
“We are really excited to race some amazing crews this weekend,” saidCoach Lane. “This will be a huge test for our program, and a great racing opportunity across the board. Racing teams from all over the country gives us a unique experience to test ourselves on the national scene. In addition, we get to race Cornell for the Class of 1989 Plate; this is a great way to contest this annual race. I am fired up!”
