PHILADELPHIA – After a weekend off from racing, the University of Pennsylvania women’s rowing team returns to action this Saturday and Sunday with the Clemson Invitational. Penn -- which is appearing in this event for the fourth-straight year -- will have four boats two eights and two fours at the event, two eights and two fours.
Each boat is scheduled for three races -- one on Saturday morning, one on Saturday afternoon, and one on Sunday morning.
Within the constructs of the Clemson races, Penn also will battle Cornell for the Raritan Cup and the Class of ’89 Plaque. The Raritan Cup goes to the winner of the Varsity 8 race between the Quakers and the Big Red, while the Class of ’89 Plaque goes to the team that performs best among all races using a points system. All four races to determine those awards will happen on Saturday morning.
“The team heads to the Clemson Invitational this evening for a weekend of great race opportunities,” said Head Coach Wesley Ng. “There are 19 other universities from across the country representing the best rowing conferences. It’s a great precursor to the Ivy League Championships in May, and we are beginning to find out where our capacity may be.
“We attended this regatta last year and had mixed results, so we will look to compete better over the entire distance and put our technical focal points to the test. A multi-day regatta is a good challenge for recovery, gaining experience, and keeping a level head regardless of race conditions or results.”
