Women's Rowing Cannot Regain Orange Challenge Cup

BOSTON - The University of Pennsylvania women's rowing team took third in the Varsity 8 race at the Orange Challenge Cup on Saturday morning, and second in the second Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 A races. The Orange Challenge Cup was contested this year on the Charles River.

Syracuse -- ranked 18th in this week's national poll -- defended the Cup in the process of sweeping four of the five races, taking first place in the Varsity 8 race with a time of 7:13.3. Host Northeastern was second, in 7:15.6, while Penn took third in 7:23.8.

In the second Varsity 8, the Orange clocked 7:27.1 to defeat second-place Penn (7:35.4) and third-place Northeastern (7:43.1). The schools went in that order in the Varsity 4A, as well, with Syracuse timed in 8:17.9, Penn in 8:43.0, and Northeastern in 8:43.6.

In the Varsity 4B race, Syracuse (8:49.6) beat Penn (9:02.8). The Quakers took first place in the third Varsity 8 race, clocking 8:13.8 which was well ahead of second-place Syracuse (8:25.0) and third-place Northeastern (8:28.6).

Saturday afternoon's races with Boston College and Buffalo were cancelled due to unrowable conditions with high winds.
