Women's Rowing Competes at Navy Day

PHILADELPHIA - The Penn women's rowing team had several boats compete at the Navy Day Regatta, which took place Saturday on the Schuylkill River. It was the first intercollegiate event of 2008-09 for the Quakers.

The day ended with the Varsity 8 finishing third in its section, clocking 15:21.20 over the 4K course. Only Navy and Georgetown had better times.

Penn had the top time in two of the events in which it competed, the Women's Novice 8+ and the Women's Doubles. in the novice, Penn's "A" boat clocked 16:00.70 to have the fastest time in its group, beating second-place Navy by more than 16 seconds. Penn's "B" boat was 11th in 17:29.90, while the "C" boat was 18th in 19:01.90.

In the women's doubles, the pair of sophomore twins Elizabeth Donald and Rebecca Donald were winners in the double sculls in 17:01.30. In the other doubles boat, Meta Rieck and Jacqueline Wood tied for eighth in 18:59.50.

In the varsity fours, Penn's "C" boat was second in 16:55.70, behind only Georgetown. The Quakers' "B" boat was fourth overall in 17:09.80, the "D" boat was sixth in 17:20.00; and the "A" boat was 10th in 17:33.20.

In the JV eights, Penn raced three boats. The "B" boat was second in 15:55.80, just behind Navy; the "A" boat was third in 16:03.70; and the "C" boat was sixth in 16:35.30.

Penn is scheduled to compete next weekend at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.
