SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Penn women's rowing team won the second varsity eight race Saturday morning as part of the Orange Challenge Cup, the Quakers' highlight of the event.
Racing in a light chop and into a headwind that increased throughout the day, the second varsity eight clocked 7:20.4 on the 2,000-meter course on Onondage Lake, defeating host Syracuse by more than two seconds and Northeastern by almost five seconds.
The varsity eight started the day and placed third in its race. Syracuse took first in 7:03.8, while Northeastern was second in 7:06.3 and Penn was third in 7:08.1. In the varsity four, Northeastern took first place followed by Penn and Syracuse, while the Orange defeated the Quakers in the second varsity four race.
In the novice races, Syracuse won both the eight and the four. Penn was second in the eight, clocking 7:56.2
The Quakers will row at home each of the next two weekends, when they host Cornell and Rutgers for the Raritan Cup.
