Women's Rowing Does Well at Connell Cup

DERBY, Conn. - The Penn women's rowing team won the varsity 4 and finished second in two other races Saturday at the Connell Cup, in which the Quakers competed against No. 6 Yale and Columbia Saturday on the Housatonic River.

Penn's varsity 4 defeated Yale by more than four seconds over the 2,000-meter course, clocking 7:07.20. Yale was second in 7:11.30, while Columbia was third in 7:22.10.

In the varsity 8 race, Yale covered the course in 6:09.40 and defeated Penn by more than three seconds; the Quakers came in second in 6:12.90. Columbia was a distant third, in 6:22.00. It was a step in the right direction for Penn's varsity 8, which fell to the Bulldogs by more than 11 seconds in this event each of the last two years.

Yale also won the second varsity 8 race, in 6:16.20 which was well ahead of the field. Columbia narrowly finishedsecond in 6:27.80,just ahead ofthird-placePenn (6:28.30).

In the third varsity 8, Yale clocked 6:26.40 which was far ahead of second-place Penn (6:46.80) and third-place Columbia (7:22.70). Penn took second easily despite catching a crab in the final 500 meters.

Penn had the quickest time in the varsity 4B race, but the Quakers were excluded from the race because they missed the turning buoys.

Penn returns to action in two weeks with the Orange Challenge Cup. This year's Cup, which pits the Quakers against Northeastern and Syracuse, will take place April 9 on the Charles River in Boston.
