Women's Rowing Goes For Cup Sweep Saturday

Directions to Rutgers Boathouse

PHILADELPHIA- After being home for its first two spring races, the Penn women's rowing team is on the road this Saturday as it faces Cornell and Rutgers for the Raritan Cup and Class of '89 Plate. Rutgers will host the races, which begin with the third varsity eight at 9:20 a.m. on the Raritan River in New Brunswick, N.J.

The Raritan Cup is given to the winning varsity eight among the three schools; Saturday's varsity race will take place at 11 a.m. The Class of '89 Plate is awarded to the school that accumulates the most points from all the day's races. Cornell won the Class of '89 Plate last year, swiping it from two-time defending champion Penn. Rutgers last won the Plate in 2006.

Penn will compete in this race, as well as next weekend against Dartmouth and Princeton. Those will be the team's last races before the EAWRC Sprints, which take place May 16 on the Cooper River just outside of Philadelphia.

"Last weekend as a team we did a really good job," said head coach Mike Lane. "This weekend will be another entire team test. Both Rutgers and Cornell are very strong teams. Cornell, especially, has come onto the national scene doing an outstanding job. We will go into the weekend with confidence but also with a fire, as we know we only have 3 regular-season races left.

After winning the varsity race just once from 1992-2006, the Quakers have taken home the Raritan Cup each of the last three years. However, Coach Lane stresses that previous results mean little when the boats leave their starting posts on Saturday.

"Our varsity eight has won this race the last three years," said Lane. "Although some might think that is added pressure, our athletes really have nothing to lose as we plan to go out, row our race and do what we need to do in order to cross the line first."
