Women's Rowing Heads Out of Region

Dale England Cup information

PHILADELPHIA - Following last weekend’s Connell Cup, the Penn women’s rowing team goes out of the region this weekend to participate in the inaugural Dale England Cup, being hosted Friday and Saturday by Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.

Penn is taking the boats that would run at the NCAA Championships -- varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four -- and each boat is slated to race three times over two days during the weekend. The event will also feature the host Hoosiers, Michigan State, Michigan and Louisville -- all of whom are nationally ranked.

This is a great opportunity for us to race out of region and go against some of the best crews in the country,” said head coach Mike Lane, whose wife Stephanie is an IU graduate. “Our goal is to make it to NCAA's, and this is an opportunity to race crews that we would only normally see at that championship.

“This is also a great way to prepare for Eastern Sprints,” he continued. “Racing twice in one day is great preparation for our championships.”

Friday's action will begin at 4 p.m. with the second Novice 8 race and conclude with the Varsity 8 race at 6 p.m. The morning session on Saturday will begin at 9 a.m. with the second Novice 8 race and end with another Varsity 8 race at 11 a.m. The afternoon session will get underway at 12:24 with the final second Novice 8 race of the weekend and will wrap up at 2:24 with the final Varsity 8 race.

The Dale England Cup will be presented to the top team at approximately 3:30 p.m.

Last weekend, the Quakers’ varsity fell to No. 1-ranked Yale but defeated Columbia. That was relatively par for the day, as Yale won every race and Penn generally finished second.

“We had some successes and some failures last weekend at the Connell Cup,” said Lane. “This is a chance to not only build on our successes, but also learn and grow from our failures. I am excited for the weekend and can't wait to see what our athletes do on the water in Indiana.
