PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women’s rowing team will knock out Cup races on consecutive days this weekend, as the Quakers make the trip to Ithaca, N.Y., to compete in the inaugural Nordic 9 races being hosted by Cornell.
On Friday evening, Penn will race five boats against Syracuse and Northeastern as those schools compete for the annual Orange Challenge Cup. On Saturday morning, the Quakers will meet Cornell across five boats for the annual Class of ’89 Plaque. The University of Rhode Island will also field a boat in four of those Saturday morning races.
In addition to Syracuse, Northeastern, URI and Cornell, the Nordic 9 will also have crews from Iowa, Yale, Boston University and Buffalo
“This weekend will be a great opportunity to race some quality crews, both Friday evening and Saturday morning,” said head coach Mike Lane. “We have made some adjustments from last weekend, and expect to be able to execute this weekend to the best of our ability. I am really looking forward to heading North and competing this weekend! This is a great opportunity to make adjustments and race some very fast crews. Overall, it should be a great weekend and this figures to be a great event.”
The Orange Challenge Cup has been raced every year since 1981, while the Class of '89 Plaque has been contested every year since 1991.
Penn was victorious in the Orange Challenge Varsity 8 race in both 2011 and 2012, before Syracuse snatched the cup in 2013 and retained it last spring in Boston. Cornell has won the Varsity 8 race each of the last six years in the Class of ’89 Plaque, with Penn’s last victories coming when the Quakers won three straight years from 2007-09.
