Women's Rowing Hits the Road for the First Time this Spring

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania women’s rowing team hits the road for the first time this spring, traveling to New Brunswick, N.J. to face Rutgers and Cornell in the Class of ’89 Plate on the Raritan River Saturday evening.

The History

Saturday will be the 16th running of this race. Cornell holds a formidable series lead with 10 wins, followed by Rutgers (4) and Penn (2). Rutgers won the race last year for the first time since 2001, coming in at 7:12.9. Cornell took second (7:16.6) and Penn placed third (7:19.1). The Quakers’ last victory in this race came in 2000.

Last Time Out

Penn finished second in the Orange Challenge Cup last Saturday, winning three races. In the varsity 8, Penn was less than a second off the pace in a tight finish with Northeastern, crossing the line in 6:33.2 to Northeastern’s 6:32.4. The second varsity 8 won by nearly six seconds in 6:38.3, while the varsity 4 took second in 7:41.0, behind winner Northeastern in 7:36.0. The novice 4+ dominated its race, cruising to a win in 7:46.2, 20 seconds better than Syracuse’s second-place 8:06.6. The novice 8 won a close race, beating Syracuse to the line by eight-tenths of a second in 6:44.4.
