PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania women’s rowing team is sponsoring a Junior Day on Sunday, March 5, 2006 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.. The purpose of this Junior Day is to introduce prospective female rowers who are currently juniors in high school to Penn's rowing program, facilities, campus, and the many academic opportunities offered at Penn through its four undergraduate schools: The College, Wharton School of Business, Nursing, and Engineering.
Penn's program is the only women’s rowing program in the Ivy League to recruit freshmen to train and compete on the varsity squad, whereas traditional programs separate “novices” from “the varsity” for a full year.
"We believe in providing athletes an opportunity to be challenged at the highest level starting their first day in college," said Head Coach Barb Kirch Grudt. "Of course, we do still have a novice program for developing freshmen not quite ready for that challenge. However, our primary focus is being competitive nationally and within our league at the varsity level."
