Women's Rowing Hosts Cornell, Rutgers Saturday

Directions to Boathouse Row/Grandstands

PHILADELPHIA - The Penn women’s rowing team has moved into final preparations for the Eastern Sprints in May, and they will conclude their cup season by hosting a pair of events. The first comes Saturday, when the Quakers welcome Cornell and Rutgers to Boathouse Row to compete for the Raritan Cup/Class of ’89 Plate.

The teams will begin racing at 12:45 p.m., with the Raritan Cup (varsity) race scheduled to begin at approximately 1:28 p.m. Following the race, awards will be presented at the Canoe Club, and then Penn fans are invited to join the team for a BBQ back at the Penn Boathouse.

There will be a spectator bus leaving from campus at noon from 38th Street under the Locust bridge (between Chestnut and Walnut). After awards, the bus will return from the Canoe Club to the boathouse, and then from the boathouse to campus at 3 or 4 p.m.

Penn has won both the Raritan Cup (varsity race) and the Class of ’89 Plate -- given to the team that accumulates the most points on the day -- four times since it began in 1991, including each of the last two years. Last year, the Quakers won the varsity race by more than three seconds ahead of Cornell, while Rutgers was a distant third.

“We are expecting great weather Saturday, and I am excited that we get to host the races,” said head coach Mike Lane. “I think it adds to the excitement for our women, knowing that their friends can see them compete, because there are only a few opportunities for that to happen. I am hoping that excitement translates into good performances on the water.”
