Women's Rowing Hosts Orange Challenge Cup on Saturday

PHILADELPHIA - The Penn women's rowing team returns to action this Saturday, hosting the Orange Challenge Cup against Syracuse and Northeastern. All the races will take place on the Schuylkill River's race course.

The varsity 8 race will be the second of the day, taking place at 9:50 a.m. after the third varsity goes at 9:30. The second varsity will race at 10:10, followed at 10:30 by the varsity 4A. The varsity B boats will conclude the day, going off at 10:50.

Like the races two weeks ago, Saturday's races will be broadcast so that people can hear it from their phone or computer. In order to hear the race calls, which will go up at approximately 9:20 a.m., either click here or call 605-715-4900 (passcode 575719#).

(A spectator bus will leave campus from 38th and Locust at 9 a.m.; it will stop at the boathouse and then proceed to the stands for viewing)

All three schools come into Saturday's races unranked in the latest CRCA national poll, although the Quakers are on the cusp of the Top 20 with the most voting points of any teams outside the poll. Saturday provides the team with an opportunity to make a strong showing and try to push its way into the rankings.

In the varsity 8 race, Penn is looking for its first win since 1995. Syracuse hosted and won last year's race, held on Lake Onondaga, snapping a three-year win streak by Northeastern's varsity 8.

"The Orange Challenge Cup is always the most competitive race of our season," said head coach Mike Lane. "Both Syracuse and Northeastern are extremely competitive crews, and this race is a great indicator of where we stack up against a very competitive Eastern Sprints field.

"We had some good success at the Connell Cup two weeks ago (against No. 1 Yale and Columbia), but we also made some mistakes," he continued. "We have spent the last two weeks correcting those mistakes. All of our athletes are extremely excited to get back on our home course to defend our home water!"
