Women's Rowing Loses '89 Plate to Cornell

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The Penn women's rowing team was unable to retain the Class of '89 Plate Saturday, as Cornell swept both the Raritan Cup and the '89 Plate by defeating the Quakers and host Rutgers on the Raritan River.

The Big Red swept all six races that were contested Saturday morning, including the varsity eight where they rowed the 2,000-meter course in 6:32.3. Penn's varsityeight losttheirskeg (fin) on the way to the start, and as a result they were forced to use their third varsity eight boat. The Quakers clocked in at 6:38.3. Rutgers was third in 6:44.7.

In the second varsity, Cornell won in 6:42.0, while Penn was second in 6:46.6 and Rutgers was third in 6:59.8. In the varsity four, Cornell's 7:31.0 was well ahead of Penn's 7:40.7.

In the third varsity eight, Cornell (6:52.1) defeated Penn (7:02.6) and Rutgers (7:49.6). The Big Red then topped the Quakers in the varsity 4 B and varsity 4 C races.

Penn will conclude theCup portion of its schedule next Saturday, taking on Dartmouth and Princeton for theClass of 1984 Award Plaqueon Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J.
