Women's Rowing Retains Raritan Cup

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Penn women’s rowing team won a pair of races Saturday at the Class of ‘89 Plate competition, and came in second in the four other races that were run on the Cayuga River with host Cornell and Rutgers.

On flat water with an occasional slight tailwind, and very good racing conditions throughout the morning, the Quakers defended their Raritan Cup at the varsity eight race, clocking 6:39.5 over the 2,000-meter course. Cornell was second, in 6:42.6, while Rutgers was a distant third in 7:01.4.

In the second novice four race, the Quakers clocked 7:36.7 to down the other two schools by more than 30 seconds.

In the second varsity eight, Cornell was first in 6:48.7 while Penn was second in 6:52.3. Both were well ahead of Rutgers. In the novice eight race, the Big Red was first in 6:52.6, six seconds ahead of Penn and 20 seconds up on Rutgers.
