PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania women's rowing team finished second in all but one race at the Class of 1984 Award Plaque races, including all three NCAA boats (Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, Varsity 4 A). The races took place Saturday morning on the Schuylkill River between the Quakers, No. 8 Princeton, and Dartmouth..
The major result came in the Varsity 8 race, where Penn took second place behind Princeton but ahead of Dartmouth. It was the Quakers' first win over the Big Green in the Varsity 8 race since 2002. Princeton's winning time was 6:21.7, with Penn second in 6:33.7 and Dartmouth third in 6:36.5.
In the Second Varsity 8, Princeton won in 6:32.4, followed by Penn (6:45.0) which nipped Dartmouth (6:45.3) at the finish line. Penn also was second in the Varsity 4 A race; the Quakers' time of 7:24.8 was behind Princeton (7:17.3) but ahead of Dartmouth (7:31.7).
Penn took second in the Varsity 4 B race, as well, clocking 7:31.7 to finish behind Princeton (7:17.8) and ahead of Dartmouth (7:38.1). In the Third Varsity 8 race, Princeton won in 6:45.0 and was ahead of Dartmouth (7:00.4) and Penn (7:10.1). Princeton also won the Varsity 4 C race.
This was Penn's final Cup race of the season; the Quakers will return to action on Sunday, May 17 at the Ivy League Championships on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
