Women's Rowing Sweeps Saint Joseph's, GW

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania women's rowing team opened the spring portion of its 2014-15 season in emphatic fashion, sweeping all five races against Saint Joseph's and George Washington Saturday morning in perfect racing conditions on the Schuylkill River.

In the Varsity 8 race, Penn clocked 6:37.1 over the 2,000-meter course to easily defeat Saint Joseph's (6:44.4) and George Washington (6:54.7).

In the second Varsity 8, the Quakers were timed in 6:38.9; SJU and GW needed video to determine second place, and it was determined that the Hawks (6:50.2) nipped the Colonials (6:50.7).

In the Varsity 4 A race, Penn's time of 7:28.0 was ahead of GW (7:35.0) and SJU (7:52.9).

Penn's time of 6:56.9 was enough to win the third Varsity 8 race, ahead of second-place Saint Joseph's (7:00.6) and third-place George Washington (7:15.8). The Varsity 4 B race featured just two boats, with Penn (7:29.4) easily defeating SJU (8:11.6).

Penn returns to action next Saturday with the start of its Cup season; the Quakers will be in New York to face Columbia and Yale for the Connell Cup.
