PHILADELPHIA – After a successful opening race against Saint Joseph’s and George Washington last Saturday, the University of Pennsylvania women’s rowing team moves into its cup-racing season on Saturday. The Quakers will compete for the Connell Cup against Yale and Columbia. This year’s races will take place on the Schuylkill River, after being originally scheduled for Columbia's home course in Orchard Beach, N.J.

With the exception of one year (1978), these programs have competed for the Connell Cup every year since 1975. Yale has dominated the Varsity 8 race, winning all but four of the years. One of those exceptions took place two years ago, when Columbia gained the victory.

“I am really excited to line up against Yale and Columbia on Saturday,” said Penn’s head coach, Mike Lane. “Both are great competitors in the Ivy League. I am looking forward to seeing the improvements we have made through the last week. This is a chance to put what we learned to test.”
