DERBY, Conn. - The Penn women's rowing team took second place in all four races run Saturday at the Connell Cup, which was hosted by Yale and also included Columbia.
The race was cancelled after the second varsity race due to the extraordinarily bad conditions on the Housatonic River. The teams who raced did so amid whitecapped waters, and the wind only increased as the day went on until it was finally decided the conditions were unraceable.
For Penn, there was much to be happy about -- especially in the varsity and novice races.
The varsity eight knew it was up against arguably its biggest challenge of the season Saturday, as Yale is the defending NCAA champion and preseason No. 1 boat in the nation. The Quakers rose to the occasion, though, losing by less than three seconds to the Bulldogs who clocked 6:20.7 over the 2,000-meter course. Penn was second in 6:23.5, while Columbia was a distant third in 6:38.6.
"I was extremely happy with the way our varsity ran today," said head coach Mike Lane. "They were racing in extremely difficult circumstances -- the conditions were awful, and they were facing the No. 1 boat in the country. For the women to race the way they did says a lot. To finish less than a boat length out of first was great.
"The result we had today in the varsity race says a lot about the progress we are making," he continued. "We entered this race unranked, but after the push we gave to the No. 1 boat today I think we have earned a national ranking."
In the novice eight, Penn also gave Yale a run for its money, losing by just overa second as the Bulldogs clocked 6:43.1 and the Quakers timed 6:44.3. Columbia caught a crab at about the midway point and was timed in 7:23.9.
Yale ran away from the field in the second varsity eight and varsity four races, winningthe first by17 seconds and the second by more30seconds.
