Women's Soccer Announces 2012 Schedule

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania women's soccer program has announced its 2012 schedule. The Quakers will be home eight times this fall, with a road trip to California highlighting the road portion of their 16-match schedule. In addition, the Red and Blue will face three opponents they have never seen before.

"I am looking forward to this fall," said Head Coach Darren Ambrose, who enters his 13th season overseeing the Penn program. "The games we have offer us a chance to test ourselves against some great competition all over the country. It is going to prepare us for the ever-competitive Ivy League season, with some tough games on the road ahead of us."

Penn will open the 2012 season with three home matches, hosting James Madison and Temple during the Labor Day weekend and then Marist the following Friday (the Quakers' first-ever meeting with the Red Foxes).

The Quakers' first road trip, two days after the Marist match, is hardly that -- a quick swing to neighboring Drexel as they face the Dragons for the first time since 2004. However, the Red and Blue head just a little further the following weekend, hitting the Golden State to face California and Sacramento State. It will be Penn's second trip to California in three years, and their third since 2004. The meeting with Sacramento State will be the first in program history.

Penn returns home and hits Ivy League play on Friday, Sept. 21, hosting defending champion Harvard in a game that has essentially decided the conference title the last three years. The Quakers then host another first-time opponent, Boise State, on that Sunday.

Penn is at Cornell on Friday, Sept. 28, before returning home and hosting NJIT on that Sunday. The next weekend, the Red and Blue host Columbia Friday night in an Ivy League match before hitting the road to play Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sunday.

The rest of the regular season features Saturday matches against Ivy League opponents, with three of them on the road. The Quakers will end the campaign at Dartmouth, at Yale, hosting Brown, then at Princeton.

Penn finished the 2011 season with a 14-2-1 record, tying school records for most wins and fewest losses and setting the mark for best win percentage. The Quakers also led the nation in shutout percentage as they finished second in the Ivy League to Harvard. Penn was the 2010 Ivy League champion and has gone 9-2-3 in conference play the last two years.
