PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania’s head coach for women’s soccer, Darren Ambrose, has announced the program’s 2013 schedule. The Quakers are slated to play 17 matches, nine of them at home.
"We are looking forward to the upcoming season,” said Ambrose, who enters his 14th season at the helm in 2013. “We have a great returning group, and I am confident our incoming class will help us achieve our goals this year.
“We have been in a title situation each of the past three years, and I think this group is motivated to be in it again and come out on top this time,” he continued. “Our early-season games will determine what we are made of before we get into the Ivy season.”
Penn opens the season with three straight home matches, beginning with a pair of first-time opponents in Saint Peter’s (Friday, Sept. 6) and Mount St. Mary’s (Sunday, Sept. 8). The following Friday, Penn hosts neighborhood rival Drexel at 5 p.m., before its first match away from Rhodes Field against city foe Saint Joseph’s on Sunday, Sept. 15.
Penn’s first true road trip comes the next weekend and will take the women to Virginia for a pair of games. The Quakers will meet William & Mary on Friday night and then Old Dominion on Sunday. Penn will be facing W&M for just the third time in program history, and the first time since 2001, while ODU is on the schedule for the first time since 1996.
Penn opens Ivy League play on Friday, Sept. 27, traveling to Harvard to meet the Crimson at 5 p.m. The Quakers return home for a Sunday non-conference match, hosting Lehigh at 2:30 p.m.
Cornell comes to Rhodes Field on Friday, Oct. 4 for a 7 p.m. match, and then Penn hosts Fairleigh Dickinson -- the Quakers’ first meeting with the Knights -- on that Sunday. The following weekend, the Quakers are at Columbia for another Ivy League match on Saturday at 4 p.m., then go to Navy for a Monday afternoon game.
Penn hosts Dartmouth (Saturday, Oct. 19) and Yale (Saturday, Oct. 26) on consecutive Saturdays, sandwiching those Ivy League matches around a non-conference contest at NJIT (Tuesday, Oct. 22). The Quakers close out the regular season with a road match at Brown (Saturday, Nov. 2), and the traditional season finale against last year’s Ivy League champion, Princeton (Friday, Nov. 8).
Penn finished the 2012 season with a 9-6-1 record, and for the third year in a row the Quakers entered their final match with a chance of winning at least a share of the Ivy League title. The women lost that match, 4-2 to Princeton, and ended up third in the league at 5-2-0. In the last three seasons, Penn has gone a combined 14-4-3 in Ivy play.
Fifteen letterwinners return for this coming fall, and they are expected to be joined by seven newcomers. The captains for the 2013 season are seniors Brianna Rano, Kerry Scalora and Claire Walker.
