Women's Soccer Announces Class of 2012

PHILADELPHIA - University of Pennsylvania women’s soccer coach Darren Ambrose has announced his incoming class for the 2008 season. The program’s Class of 2012 will feature eight recruited student-athletes.

“This is a wonderful group of newcomers to our program,” said Ambrose, who will enter his ninth season at Penn in 2008. “I feel we were able to strengthen the squad in all areas with these eight women. They all bring something different to our program that will help continue the winning tradition Penn Soccer has developed. They will be a credit to our program, both on and off of the field.”

Once again, Penn’s class stretches from one coast to the other. The Quakers stayed local in recruiting Caroline Williams (Ambler, Pa.), and also snared a pair of New Yorkers in Colleen Barry (LaGrangeville) and Marin McDermott (Rhinebeck). Staying in the Mid-Atlantic region, Penn also got a commitment from Adrienne Lerner (Chevy Chase, Md.). Penn’s recruiting also reached into Michigan with Theresa Yankovich (Northville) and Texas with Megan Cassidy (Dallas). The Quakers’ other two commits came from California, in Ursula Lopez-Palm (Escondido) and Kelly McCarthy (Los Angeles).

These eight freshmen will join the Quakers for preseason camp in August. Penn enters the 2008 season looking to defend it Ivy League title -- the Quakers went 6-1-0 in league play, and finished the 2007 season with a 13-4-1 overall record. That gave the Quakers a berth in the NCAA Championship, where they lost to James Madison 2-0 in the first round. Penn put all of this together with a roster that had no seniors on it.

Penn opens the 2008 season in Pittsburgh with a pair of games, taking on Pitt on Friday, Sept. 5, and then Robert Morris on Sunday, Sept. 7.
