NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Penn women's soccer team got a goal from senior Kaitlin Campbell in the 20th minute, and it stood up as the Quakers defeated Cal State Northridge Friday night, 1-0.
Penn improved to 3-2-0 with the victory; all of the Red and Blue's wins have come via shutout. CSUN fell to 4-4-0 overall.
Campbell's goal -- her first of the season -- came when she headed in a free kick from classmate Sarah Friedman. The assist was Friedman's first this season, and the 23rd of her career. She now needs two to tie Katy Cross as the program's all-time leader in that category.
Penn's junior goalkeeper, Caroline Williams, was the other story in the opening stanza. She had all of her six saves in that time, giving her 13 stops over the last two contests. CSU-Northridge outshot Penn, 8-6, in the first half and took four corner kicks while the Quakers had none in the first 45 minutes.
Penn outshot the Matadors, 4-3, in the second half and each team had two corner kicks. Kerry Scalora and Ursula Lopez-Palm had two shots apiece to lead the Quakers.
Penn returns to action Sunday, also in California. The Quakers will face Loyola Marymount at 1 p.m. (4 p.m. Eastern).
