SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of Pennsylvania got a goal from freshman Maddie Dawkins midway through the second half Sunday, and it was enough to propel the Quakers to a 1-0 win over host USC Upstate.
Fellow freshman Sasha Stephens sent a ball into the middle from the end line on the left side, and Dawkins beat her defender to one-time a volley into the net for the match’s only goal.
Penn improved to 4-1-0 with the win, while the Spartans fell to 1-6-1.
Penn outshot USC Upstate, 18-1, and forced Spartans goalkeeper Ellen Bright to make eight saves. At the other end, Carrie Crook had a stop on USC-U’s only credited shot and got the solo shutout.
Penn is back in action twice next weekend; the Quakers host VCU Friday at 7 p.m., then travel to Towson on Sunday for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
