Women's Soccer Goes Scoreless With Saint Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA - The good news Friday night was that the Penn women's soccer team's defense was able to collect its first shutout of the 2009 season.

The bad news was that the Quakers' offense, normally potent, was stymied at the other end. The result was a 0-0 draw at the Hawks' Finnesey Field.

Saint Joseph's (2-3-2) outshot Penn (3-1-1) on the night, 15-11, including a 7-3 margin in the first half when Quaker goalkeeper Caroline Williams was forced to make four of her six saves. In the second half, SJU looked like it might take the lead when Williams made a save on a point-blank shot from Jen Pfeiffer. The ball bounced to the Hawks' Lauren Sawyer, who put her attempt over the crossbar.

Penn managed just two shots on the goal the entire night, from Theresa Yankovich and Erin Beck, and SJU goalkeeper Christine Neal was equal to the task both times.

Penn returns to action Sunday, hosting Georgetown at Rhodes Field. Kickoff is slated for noon, to be followed by the Penn and Navy men's soccer teams.
