PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women’s soccer program held its annual banquet on Saturday, March 23 at The Inn at Penn. It was a great way to celebrate a very successful senior class and another great year. As has become tradition in recent years, alums presenteda majority of the awards to the recipients.
Here is the list of awards presented…
Rookie of the Year- Erin Mikolai
Iron Quaker – Caroline Dwyer
Most Improved – Clara Midgley
Defensive Player - Alex Dayneka
Offensive Player – Kerry Scalora
Red and Blue – Haley Cooper
Goldklang Award – Erin Beck
Team MVP – Alex Dayneka
Academic Achievement Awards – Sarah Banks, Claire Walker, Alex Dayneka
Prior to the banquet, the annual alumni game was held on Rhodes Field.
The match was very competitive, with the alums scoring first less than 10 minutes in when Molly Weir (CAS'09) smashed the ball home from about 15 yards.
Reality soon set in as older legs wore down despite the mass substitutions, and the current team started to gain control of the possession. However, every time they got near the goal Sara Rose (CAS '10) produced some great saves to keep the alums ahead. Finally, Laura Oliver tied the game up after a great combination on top of the box as shebeat Rose with a shot low and to the right.
Tied 1-1 at the half, the current team expected to see 12 or more players on the field for the alums in the second half -- but in the interest of fairness they played 11 (for the most part). More great goalkeeping at both ends of the field, from Rose and freshmen Kalijah Terilli, kept the score at 1-1 until Kerry Scalora played short corner with Oliver and smacked a shot into the upper corner that Rose waved at.
While the end result of 2-1 favored the current team, the game was played in great spirit. It was competitive and gave the current team a needed 90-minute game. The alums had chances to tie the game late, but for a good save by Terilli and a miss by a certain alum from 8 yards (she shall go unnamed here to preserve her reputation).
The Penn women's soccer spring season continues with a home match against Villanova on Friday, April 12 at 7 p.m.; on Sunday, April 21, the Quakers will host Rutgers (noon) and Temple (6 p.m.) at Rhodes Field.
