PHILADELPHIA - Senior Jessica Fuccello took advantage of an Army miscue in the first half and scored the only goal Penn would need as the Quakers defeated the Black Knights, 1-0, at Rhodes Field.
In the game's 17th minute, an Army goal kick went straight to Fuccello who was standing about 30 yards out. With a defender racing to come back and catch her, Fuccello collected the ball and fired a shot that went into the upper far corner as Army goalkeeper Alex Lostetterran to get back in the goal.
The goal was Fuccello's Ivy League-leading 11th of the season, and marked the fourth time in five games she has found the back of the net. It also improved Penn to 6-2-2 overall and gave the Quakers a 3-0-0 mark on the week. Army fell to 5-5-2 overall.
Penn outshot Army 9-0 in the first half, but the Black Knights came on strong as the match progressed and put Penn goalkeeper Caroline Williams on the spot twice in the final three minutes. The first time she was able to come up with a diving save of a Caroline Rice effort from directly in front, and a few seconds later she cut down an angle and stymied Marilinh Nguyen from about 10 yards out.
Those were Williams' only saves as she posted her third clean sheet of the season. At the other end, Lostetter had four stops.
Penn returns to action next Saturday at Columbia, taking on the Lions in a key Ivy League battle at 7 p.m.
