PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Penn women's soccer team, playing without the Ivy League's leading scorer, used a goal fromits ownsecond-leading scorer to defeat Brown, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at the Bears' Stephenson Field.

Sophomore Marin McDermott was sprung on a breakaway in the 80th minute of play, pulled the goalie to the outside, and netted the game's only goal for her sixth tally of the season.

Penn (9-4-2, 3-3-0 Ivy) played this match without Jessica Fuccello, the nation's fourth-leading goalscorer, because she received a red card in last weekend's match against Yale. However, after a pair of heartbreaking 1-0 overtime losses to the Bears the last two years, Saturday's win was sweet vindication.

Brown (5-8-1, 2-4-0) outshot Penn, 16-8, including 11-4 in the second half, and took eight corner kicks to the Quakers' three. However, sophomore Caroline Williams was called upon to make just two saves in gaining the clean sheet -- her fourth solo this season. At the other end, Brenna Hogue and Steffi Yellin went a half apiece and combined for three stops.

Penn's season will conclude next weekend with Princeton. The Quakers and Tigers will kick off at Rhodes Field at 5 p.m., the first half of a Penn-Princeton women's/men's doubleheader.
