NEW YORK CITY - The University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team was the beneficiary of a Columbia own goal in the first half on Saturday evening, and that was enough as the Quakers defeated the Lions, 1-0, at the CU Soccer Stadium.
With the win, Penn improved to 2-1-0 in Ivy League play and 7-1-3 overall. Columbia fell to 6-4-3 overall, 0-2-1 in Ivy play.
The own goal came off a corner kick less than five minutes into the contest. Amidst a scramble in front, the ball hit off a Lion defender and went into the goal..
From there, it was up to the Penn defense to preserve the shutout, which the Quakers did for their third straight clean sheet and eighth this season.Penn outshot Columbia just8-7, but the Lions put only two of their shotson goal and Kalijah Terilli was equal to both efforts. The Quakers, meanwhile, put six of their eight shots on goal and forced Allison Spencer to make six stops.
Penn returns to action on Monday, this time heading South to face Navy. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
