Women's Squash Advances to Howe Cup Semifinal

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In the first round of the A-division of the Howe Cup, Penn downed Cornell, 8-1. The Quakers will now take on the winner of the Harvard-Stanford match on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

The Quakers swept the matches one thru eight and picked up 3-0 decisions at No. 1, 3, 4 and 7 slots.At the No. 1 position, Kristen Lange outplayed Cornell’s Rebecca Hazell 3-0 (9-6, 9-1, 9-2), while Alisha Turner downed Jean Gemmell, 3-0, at No. 3 (9-4, 9-1, 9-5). Britt Hebden and Tara Chawla both swept their opponents in three games. Penn also won the No. 6 slot, as Annie Maderia defeated Lauren Sachvie by a 3-1 margin (3-9, 9-1, 9-4, 9-4).

Sydney Scott defeated Shivangi Paranjpe by a 3-1 margin after falling to her in the regular season by the same score. After a long first game that went in favor of Paranjpe, 10-8, Scott rattled off the next three games, 9-3, 9-2, 9-3, to take the match.

Christina Matthias and Taylor Booth both were challenged in their respective matches. Matthias took the first two games from Alex Cornell before Cornell then picked up the third and fourth to force a final game. Matthias then finished Cornell off in a quick 9-1 game. Booth traded matches with Annie Ritter (9-6, 5-9, 9-4, 8-10) before taking the fifth game, 9-5.
