PHILADELPHIA – Opening the regular season on the road in Maine, the University of Pennsylvania women’s squash team defeated Bates, Colby and Bowdoin, all by a 9-0 score over the weekend.
Saturday morning, the third-ranked Quakers (3-0) rolled out nine straight individual victories to begin the season against No. 14 Bates (3-2). Sophomore Anaka Alankamony went to four games in the No. 1 position, with every other match decided in three games. Freshmen Marie Stephan, Melissa Alves, and Ali Richmond all picked up their first collegiate victories.
Later on Saturday, Penn defeated No. 22 Colby (2-1) by a 9-0 score, with the entire ladder winning in three games against the Mules.
On Sunday, the Red and Blue rounded out the weekend with a 9-0 victory over No. 19 Bowdoin (1-3). Picking up their third wins of the season alongside Alankamony, Stephan, Alves, and Richmond, were senior Colleen Fehm, juniors Yan Xin Tan and Haidi Lala, and sophomore Michelle Wong.
After a successful opening weekend, the Penn women’s squash team is not scheduled to return to action until after the New Year, when they travel to Stanford to face the seventh-ranked Cardinal on Jan. 3 before facing No. 8 George Washington in California on Jan. 4.
